Kosher Salt Versus Sea Salt

When it comes to cooking with salt, the water content is what determines the strength of the salt. There are different brands out there for a reason. Before you go out and buy a brand, you should know what you’re getting into.

Kosher salt is a great choice for those who want the strongest salt but aren’t sure how much to use. There are many types of sea salt available at stores, but in order to find the strongest sea salt, you have to buy from an authorized distributor. If you are ordering online, ask if the salt is coming from a certified salt supplier. You can usually tell this by checking the bar code on the bag.

Sea salt is slightly stronger than kosher salt, but is almost always used in soups. Sea salt has to be less salty because it is made from seawater, which has a lower concentration of sodium than sea water.

The two are often mixed together in some recipes. Most recipes that call for sea salt will also call for a pinch of kosher salt. Most kosher recipes call for the same amount of sea salt as sea salt, so it isn’t necessary to include both.

Most spices will have a balance between kosher salt and sea salt. You may want to mix kosher salt and sea salt so that your dishes don’t get too salty.

Now that you know more about the differences between sea salt and kosher salt, you should know where you can get them. Sea salt has several grades, depending on the water content.

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
